Debt Consolidation
Credit Counseling

Debt consolidation credit counseling is simply the practice of educating you on the best route to get out of debt and to stay out of debt. You'll learn all about managing your debt.

A counselor will educate you about...

  • budgeting

  • credit

  • finances

A Debt consolidation loan is something you can obtain on your own through a lender.  But if that's not an option for you, then debt consolidation credit counseling services might be worth your time.

In fact, credit counseling is now required by law for anyone thinking about filing for bankruptcy. Yes, it's now required by law - but it's only required IF you are going to file for any kind of bankruptcy.

If you're not thinking about filing for bankruptcy but you still want to get the counseling, you can.

Your counseling will basically consist of you taking a 60 or 90 minute class with the counselor of your choice.

This class can take place in person, online or over the phone.

The counseling agency you choose should be accredited by the NFCC. This safeguards against unscrupulous counselors.

As with many other things, shop around until you find a company that you feel comfortable with and can trust.

Credit counseling or debt consolidation services can be a huge benefit if you are dealing with people that have your best interests in mind. Make sure your counselor has yours in mind.

How Credit Counseling Works

During your debt consolidation credit counseling session, you will be taught about budgeting on a weekly and monthly basis.

On top of being taught how to budget and manage your money better, your counselor will also evaluate your finances.

They will look at what you owe, how much you make, your other expenses and your family budget.

Once they evaluate your situation, they will then inform you of the best options available to you. They basically help you develop a debt management plan (DMP).

As part of that plan, they call all your creditors for you and negotiate lower interest rates and lower monthly payments.

They will then set a repayment plan.

If your creditors agree with the repayment plan, you can then start paying the new lower payments. You would then pay the credit counseling agency and they in turn pay off all of your creditors.

A first-rate counselor will also help you plan for your financial future on top of helping you fix your current troubles.
